PHYSICAL MEDICINE & FUNCTIONAL REHAB

OUR APPROACH TO PHYSICAL THERAPY

"Rehabilitation is a therapeutic production in which the patient plays

the main role and must not only be a passive object of treatment."

~ Karel Lewit

Our Approach to Physiotherapy

At River Forest Health and Wellness, we utilize a variety of advanced physiotherapy techniques and approaches to address the root cause of your pain and dysfunction. Our goal is to provide personalized treatment plans that promote healing and prevent future injuries.

1. McKenzie Therapy

McKenzie Therapy is a globally recognized method for assessing and treating musculoskeletal disorders. We use this technique to help patients with back, neck, and extremity pain, focusing on self-care and prevention through specific exercises and posture correction.

2. Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS)

DNS is a cutting-edge approach based on developmental kinesiology. By retraining the nervous system, DNS helps restore proper movement patterns, enhancing stability and function, particularly in cases of chronic pain, sports injuries, and pediatric conditions.

3. Active Release Technique (ART)

ART is a hands-on therapy used to diagnose and treat soft tissue injuries. This technique is particularly effective for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, and plantar fasciitis, helping to break down scar tissue and improve movement.

4. Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is an advanced treatment option for chronic pain conditions such as plantar fasciitis and tendinopathies. This non-invasive technique stimulates healing at the cellular level, promoting tissue repair and reducing pain.

5. Dry Needling

Dry needling is a specialized technique used to treat muscle trigger points, reduce pain, and improve range of motion. It is particularly beneficial for conditions like muscle strains, myofascial pain, and chronic pain syndromes.

6. Neurodynamics

Neurodynamics focuses on the mobility and health of the nervous system. We use this approach to treat conditions like sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome, ensuring that nerves can move freely and function optimally.

7. Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

IASTM is a technique that uses specialized tools to treat soft tissue injuries, break down scar tissue, and enhance healing. It is effective for conditions like tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Setting Goals
Setting practical goals and discussing them with our providers is essential to achieving success while in therapy. Goals are also a way for both you and the physicians to monitor how  you are responding to care. Establishing sensible, specific goals is important and should be tailored to your lifestyle needs. These goals typically are related to activities of daily living (ADLs), exercise or other leisure activies that might be difficult to complete due to your compromised health.

Set achievable goals. For example, if you are not a runner, do not set goals of running a marthon within the time frame of the next 4 weeks.

Be Realistic
While physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and massage therapy are all extremely successful in treating most conditions, many injuries take time to completely heal and cannot be ameliorated in one visit. While our physicians are well trained and successful in treating many conditions, developing an accurate diagnose may be difficult on the first visit. For these cases, please keep in mind it could take 2-4 visits before a thorough diagnosis is made, one that fully incorporates a comprehensive understanding your condition.

You Have a Responsibility
Our team of providers will go to great lengths to help you to reach your goals. However, you are an integral part of the healing process and it is essential that you devote time outside the office visit to comply with the treatment plan that addresses your health goals. THIS IS A REQUIREMENT. While in therapy at River Forest Health and Wellness, you will be provided with the tools to lead to a full recovery and reduce the risk of recurring injury; however, It will be up to you to take personal responsibility for carrying out the course of treatment.

Our Responsibility
The physicians at River Forest Health and Wellness are dedicated and committed to providing efficient, effective treatment for most conditions. However, there are someconditions that physiotherapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and massage therapy cannot successfully treat. In these cases, Dr. Jim and Dr. Jennifer will provide you with references to other professionals who will best fit your needs.

Typical Treatment Plans

At River Forest Health and Wellness, with the focus on patient self-treatment, our patients find themselves getting better faster. The average treatment plan lasts 6-8 visits. Our team of physicians takes pride in educating each patient in detail about the problem that exists and provides each patient with the tools to successfully overcome the primary reason for their visit.
