It aims to relieve pain and restore motion by releasing tension and tightness in the fascia. When integrated with concepts from Thomas Myers' "Anatomy Trains," it involves understanding and working along the body's myofascial meridians, or "anatomy trains," which are lines of connective tissue that transmit force and movement throughout the body.

Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds and interpenetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ in the body. This intricate network plays a crucial role in maintaining structural integrity, supporting movement, and facilitating communication within the body.

 

The Anatomy Trains Concept

 

Developed by Thomas Myers, the Anatomy Trains concept revolutionized our understanding of how the fascia connects various parts of the body. Myers identified specific myofascial meridians, or “trains,” that link muscles and tissues along defined pathways. These trains are integral to how we move and how tension patterns are distributed throughout the body.

 

  •     Superficial Back Line: Connecting the entire back from the toes to the head.

  •     Superficial Front Line: Running from the toes to the top of the skull along the front of the body.

  •     Lateral Line: Running along the sides of the body, from the feet to the neck.

  •     Spiral Line: Wrapping around the body, integrating movements across multiple planes.

  •     Deep Front Line: Connecting the core muscles, crucial for posture and stability.

 

What to Expect During a Myofascial Release Session

 

During a session at River Forest Health and Wellness, our expert therapists will use a wide range of sustained pressure to stretch and mobilize the fascia. This process helps to break down adhesions, increase blood flow, and restore flexibility to the affected areas. Sessions are often customized to the individual’s specific needs, targeting areas of tightness and discomfort.

 

How It Works

  • Assessment - Our therapist assesses the posture, movement patterns, and areas of pain or tension though range of motion testing, muscle testing and palpation of the musculoskeletal system.

  • Manual Technique -  Using hands-on techniques, the therapist applies firm sustained pressure to the myofascial tissue. The goal is to stretch and elongate the fascia, releasing any restrictions.  

  • Following the Lines -  The therapist may follow the specific pathways of the myofascial meridians, as outlined by Thomas Myers, to address interconnected areas of tension and imbalance throughout the body.
